Along Main Street in Poplarville, is a business that provides baked good needs to residents in the area.

The business is called Jenni Cakes, and is owned and operated by Jennifer Dedeaux, a Pearl River County resident who has been baking at home for the past 15 years. Dedeaux said the thing she enjoys most about baking is the outlet it gives her to take a pile of ingredients and use them to create a form of art.

“It’s like creating something from nothing,” Dedeaux said.

She decided to open her own business due to the enjoyment she got from baking for friends and family on a regular basis.

“We’re just a home-style country bakery,” Dedeaux said.

Prior to opening the store, she worked at a local truck stop, but when her mother passed she put a lot of thought into opening her own business. Through prayer and speaking with her siblings and husband, she said she decided to take the leap. The name of the business came from the nickname her family gave her.

Dedeaux said she started her business in May of last year when the owner of a previous bakery at the same location decided to close their business. That made the transition into starting her own business a bit easier, since she liked the decor of the old business, which included antique baking utensils and a rustic theme.

The only repair she had to do to the location prior to opening the store was some plumbing.

Now, Jenni Cakes is providing Poplarville area residents with their baked goods needs, including specialty cakes, wedding cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, macaroons, cookie cakes, brownie cakes, petit fours and cheesecakes.

During the summer she also sells ice cream from Country Girl’s Creamery.

Customers can also purchase coffee, hot tea, iced tea, sodas and lemonade to go with their baked good purchase.

With the Mardi Gras season gearing up, Dedeux said she also plans to add king cakes to her selection.

For Valentine’s Day, Dedeaux said she plans to offer a variety of treats, including dipped strawberries, macaroon boxes and candy trays.

Jenni Cakes is located at 615 S. Main Street, Poplarville and can be reached by calling 601-606-2401.

The business is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jenni Cakes is closed on Sunday.
