This Memorial Day weekend will include a visit from a storm now named Alberto.

His formation in the Caribbean means our hurricane season has gotten off to an unusually early start.

And that will also mean that we can expect a wet holiday weekend.

Alberto is expected to bring inches of rain our way. How many inches will be up to the track the storm takes.

Even though we won’t be expecting Hurricane Katrina level damage from this storm, Pearl River County residents will want to prepare.

The winds that will be associated with the storm will mean you’ll want to pick up anything in the yard that can be knocked around.

If you have any items around the house that would hold water, it would be a good idea to put them away as well, or at least turn them over. While a container of water won’t cause property damage, mosquitos will find them great places to start their next generation. Hopefully there won’t be any power outages as a result of this storm, but it wouldn’t hurt to take some precautions just in case. Candles can light up a room when it’s dark, but be sure to put them out before leaving that room. No one wants to call the fire department, especially in the middle of a storm. Testing your generator before the storm’s arrival wouldn’t be a bad idea either. That would include having extra gasoline on hand. If you don’t use the fuel in the generator, it can always be used to top off the tank in your vehicle, or to cut the grass that will inevitably grow higher as a result of the extra rain.

But most of all, be sure to remember what this holiday weekend is about.

Without the sacrifice of members of our armed forces, we wouldn’t enjoy the freedoms we have today.
