Two men were arrested by the Picayune Police Department for possessing controlled substances after a routine stop for careless driving found heroin and other substances in the vehicle.

According to a departmental press release, the stop occurred on Nov. 18 at about 2 p.m. when a narcotics detective on patrol noticed a vehicle traveling west on Jackson Landing Road leave the roadway several times.

A stop was conducted and the detective found 34-year-old Adam Daniel-Michael Scully of 105 Greenbriar Lane, Carriere, behind the wheel and 56-year-old Steve Richmond Burke of 684 Harry Sones Rd., Carriere in the passenger seat.

While speaking with the occupants of the vehicle, the detective noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, prompting the detective to ask the men to exit the vehicle, which they did, the release states. As the men exited the vehicle Burke threw a brown towel on the hood of the vehicle in the direction of the officer, causing a white cloud to emanate from the towel. The release states the officer was able to evade the cloud, which was later determined to possibly be heroin.

Burke became combative at that time, and attempted to elbow the officer in the face, but the officer dodged the attempt, the release states. Burke was then “escorted to the ground,” the release states, at which time he became increasingly combative.

After several commands from the officer to Burke for him to put his hands behind his back were ignored, the narcotics detective tased Burke, causing him to drop a folded white piece of paper and a digital scale, according to the release.

Burke was placed under arrest for resisting arrest by fighting and disorderly conduct failure to comply and the scale and piece of paper were recovered. Inside the paper was large amount of a white powdery substance. A field test of the substance indicated the substance was possibly heroin, the release states.

During a search of the vehicle the detective found eight used syringes, a Xanax pill, a hand rolled cigarette containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and a crushed aluminum can with a burnt residue, later determined to belong to Scully.

Burke was additionally arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and tampering with physical evidence for the towel and heroin in the piece of paper, while Scully was arrested for misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle and careless driving, the release states.
