A fire truck returning to the station after working a structure fire struck and killed a pedestrian along U.S. 11 in Nicholson.
The accident was called in at about 5:20 a.m. Friday morning, occurring near the intersection of Bennett Road, said Mississippi Highway Patrolman First Class Chase Elkins.
According to the MHP investigation, 63-year-old Billy Gipson of 1815 U.S. 11 South was walking in the roadway when he was struck by the fire truck.
Elkins said it was dark and raining at the time of the accident.
Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said the driver of the fire truck was driving back to the station after working a fire in the Nicholson area at the time of the accident.
Blood was drawn to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved, Turnage said.
No charges have been pressed against the driver, Elkins said. The incident is still under investigation.
Gipson’s cause of death was due to blunt force trauma, Turnage said.
