Exchange of gunfire hits boy in back seat of car

An 11-year-old boy was struck by a bullet off of Zion Church Road late Saturday night.

Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Marc Ogden said the call came in that night at 11:20 from a member of the nearby church. The woman reported seeing a strange vehicle in the parking lot of the church, so she stopped to investigate.

During that time, an alleged shootout broke out for an as yet unknown reason. Ogden said one of the bullets from that incident struck an 11-year-old child in the leg who was sitting back seat of the woman’s car.

The woman sped away from the scene and the child was transported to Forrest General Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound and released. Ogden said investigation into the shooting and why it occurred is ongoing.
