Officials with the Picayune Police Department have provided more details into the investigation of the shooting death of Justin Nixon of Picayune.
Nixon, 28, of 803 Weems Street, was found dead in a yard at 203 Jarrell Street the afternoon of Feb. 28. It was later determined he had been shot the day prior after engaging in a physical altercation with his cousin, 27-year-old Malcolm Nixon of 304 Jarrell St, Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said.
Earlier this week, Malcolm Nixon, Malcolm’s mother Mahala Burkett, 65, of 304 Jarrell Street and Malcolm’s girlfriend Ashlyn Cheramie, 21, of 22 Blueberry Hill, Carriere, were all arrested in relation to Justin Nixon’s death.
Magri said continued investigative work in the case shows that after the fight occurred at Malcolm Nixon’s home, Justin Nixon fled the scene on foot. At that point, Burkett allegedly handed Malcolm a gun, which Malcolm took and followed Justin Nixon on foot down Jarrell Street with Cheramie following behind.
Magri said the investigation shows that when Malcolm caught up with Justin, Malcolm allegedly shot Justin in the street somewhere between the 300 and 200 block of Jarrell Street, causing Justin to fall to the ground. It is believed that after he was shot, Justin picked himself up and ran to a yard at 203 Jarrell Street, where he would later succumb to his injuries, Magri said.
As a result of the investigation, Cheramie was arrested for hindering prosecution, Burkett was arrested for accessory before the fact of murder and hindering prosecution and Malcolm Nixon was arrested for murder in addition to his previous offenses of possession of marijuana and a hold with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
