Large scale clean up of Pearl River set for Saturday

Published 7:00 am Thursday, September 21, 2017

This Saturday, Pearl River County community members are invited to become part of an effort by residents of two states to help clean up the adjoining river.

Josh Mitchell, of the Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department, said the cleanup effort will take place Saturday at various places along the Pearl River. Areas closest to Pearl River County where cleanup efforts will take place include Walkiah Bluff Water Park in Pearl River County, 655833 Pump Slough Rd., Pearl River, Louisiana, and Pool’s Bluff near Bogalusa, Louisiana.

Cleanup efforts along the river will take place across both states as far north as Philadelphia, Mississippi and all the way south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Sign up for the event can be completed by visiting the webpage pearlriverkeeper.com. Volunteers without Internet access interested in helping can register the day of the event.

The idea is to clean the entire river by enlisting cleanup crews across the entire length of the river.

Bags will be provided to volunteers, but everyone is asked to bring their own watercraft because boats will not be provided. Mitchell said the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors will provide a dumpster at Walkiah Bluff to dispose of the collected trash.

Participants are asked to share photos of their efforts, and can attend the after party at Honey Island Fish House in Pearl River, La. , where free refreshments will be provided to volunteers, the website states.  The event starts in the morning. No start time was listed on the website for the Walkiah Bluff effort.
