Saturday evening a Lumberton man was shot in Bogalusa, La., and died after being driven back to his Pearl River County home by a female who was with him at the time.
Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said the incident occurred Saturday evening. That night, investigators with the department were called to a home on Sandy Creek Lane, Pearl River County Deputy Coroner Dempsey Seal said.
Tucker said the man had multiple gunshot wounds and apparently collapsed after arriving at the Pearl River County home. Tucker said an investigation is being conducted by the Bogalusa Police Department into the shooting since it took place in that jurisdiction.
Seal said the deceased is identified as 54-year-old John Kelly Smith. The unidentified woman, who was with Smith at the time of the shooting, drove him back home afterward. It’s unclear why the pair did not drive to a hospital.
Seal said as soon as Smith and the woman arrived at his home, he exited the passenger side of the vehicle and collapsed on the ground. Smith was pronounced at the scene.
Investigators noted gunshot wounds to Smith’s chest and left hip, Seal said.
A cause of death has not been determined, but an autopsy will be conducted by Wednesday at the earliest, Seal said.
More information will follow as it is released.
