The road is complete, and it’s convenient

For a number of years I’ve eagerly followed the construction of Highland Parkway.

It’s a topic that I, as well as many others, have been keeping an eye on for some time.

In 2012, a number of projects were presented to the community in a public hearing. One of those projects was the construction of Highland Parkway. During the presentation, the developer shared his plan to build something unique to this area along that road, an area that would house residential, commercial and medical districts, all adjacent to each other.

As I heard the developer’s presentation concerning plans to construct this multi-district development, where everything is within walking distance, it sounded like a great idea. Not just to boost economic development, but also as a way to help our city move into the future.

Now, four years later, in spite of construction of the road meeting with problems, it’s open, hopefully this time for good. As you begin to use the new road, which will turn out to be a great asset to many trying to reach Interstate 59 from southern Carriere and northern Picayune, you will notice that the developer still has plans for the area.

Some of our readers may remember that at one time, a certain major retailer expressed intent, through a representative, to construct a grocery store in the same development area. And while I’m not too concerned as to whether that will take place, I am more interested in whether the developer will be able to see his vision for a walkable community come to fruition.

If it does, it will create an area where small shop owners can establish their business, adjacent to all of the other services Picayune residents need on a daily basis.

If it happens, and is adopted by the public, it could very well be a major catalyst to help our city, and county grow.
