Keep your home, valuables and yourself safe

One of the perks we enjoy as residents of Pearl River County is a quiet place to live.
This is especially true when compared to surrounding cities such as Slidell, New Orleans and those along the Gulf Coast.
Our crime rate is relatively low, but that doesn’t mean it’s non-existent.
All of the major crimes in the big cities occur in this area; that includes robberies, burglaries and homicides. These incidents just occur far less often.
Even though crime here occurs less often, it’s important to remember that it does still take place. That means we all should protect ourselves from those who would do us harm.
It’s the season of giving, but some people are more interested in taking.
Potential criminals will be looking in the backseat of your car.
To protect yourself, keep valuable items out of sight, or leave them at home if at all possible.
Although I can’t remember a time when my family left our doors unlocked or windows open, it is said there was such a time in this county. But that time has passed.
Most of us now keep our car doors locked, homes secured and valuables tucked away in safe places.
Those of us who don’t do those things, can easily become victims of these crimes.
Typically, people who leave their doors unlocked these days, are the first to become a statistic.
So, a warning to our readers, there are bad people out there looking to take advantage of the increased activity during the holidays.
Remember to keep your valuables secure, and be mindful of your surroundings.
