“A cup of coffee shared with a friend is happiness tasted and time well spent.” –– Author unknown.
For the past few months, residents of Poplarville and beyond its city limits have been enjoying the caffeinated and homemade delights offered at The Coffee Shop.
Former cake decorator and Poplarville native Katrina Mizell assumed ownership of the shop in October.
Mizell is no stranger to the food industry after having co-owned the now closed Spider Lily Café and managing a few restaurants in town.
“I always wanted to own my own business,” Mizell said. “I love the atmosphere and the customers have been really good. It’s a good business to be in.”
Being that Poplarville is a college town, Mizell said many students visit the shop for their morning cup of coffee, as do commuters. Mizell also offers a light lunch menu for those wishing to grab a bite to eat in town during the working day.
Her varied drink menu includes lattes, iced coffees, frappuccinos, cappuccinos, chai, hot chocolate, hot apple cider, frozen lemonade and fresh fruit smoothies.
She also offers an assortment of flavored drip coffees. There are 15 flavors to choose from including, caramel, praline, pumpkin spice, mocha, coconut and the house specialty “Southern Comfort,” which is a combination of white chocolate, caramel and praline flavor. Mizell also offers sugar free, decaffeinated, non-dairy and flavor combination options.
However, Mizell said her best selling coffee is the “Death Wish,” which is labeled as the “world’s strongest coffee.”
Mizell also offers a flavor of the day and her coffee is purchased from New Orleans Roasters, she said.
Mizell’s lunch menu includes a vegan friendly sandwich, as well as chicken salad, turkey provolone and peanut butter and jelly.
Mizell’s love of baking is evident throughout her shop. Customers can choose from a variety of muffins, brownies, cookies, cake truffles and “Death Wish” candy. During the summer months, she will be selling homemade white chocolate blueberry ice cream. She also creates special order desserts including brownies, candy and cakes. Mizell bakes special treats for special occasions. For example, during Valentine’s Day, she will be makes and sells chocolate covered strawberries.
The size of coffee offerings range from 12 to 20 ounces and vary in price from $1.75 to $5. Lunch combinations cost about $7.50, she said.
Mizell also offers her customers complimentary wireless Internet. The shop seats about 12 people inside and there is also seating available outside. Space is available to rent for private events or for meetings, she said.
Mizell said her shop has been well received by the community and many students from nearby Pearl River Community College come in to study.
“People always talk about the atmosphere here,” Mizell said. “It’s a place where they come for good conversation. My customers are always happy. I’ve always wanted to open a business here and bring something that we don’t already have. I’ve always loved to cook, bake and am definitely a people person. There is a strong sense of community and family here. Poplarville is a great place to raise a family. I’ve enjoyed watching the city grow over the past few years and there’s more growth to come.”
