Furry bundles of energy will be available for adoption this Saturday at the Pearl River County SPCA.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day all kittens will be available at a reduced price as part of the local shelter’s Kitten Shower. PRCSPCA President Maria Diamond said kitten adoptions at the shelter typically cost about $100, depending on the breed. But during Saturday’s Kitten Shower they can be adopted for $50 for shorthaired breeds and $75 for longhaired breeds.
Each adoption includes spaying and neutering, microchipping, feline leukemia testing and all the necessary shots. All adopted animals will also be wormed, provided with flea control and a bag of Science Diet kitten food along with 30 days of free health insurance. Diamond said the staff at the shelter will also provide new pet owners with a lifetime of free advice.
The event will feature art crafted by the paws of the young felines as well, Diamond said.
Saturday’s adoption drive is partially in response to the large number of kittens the shelter has taken in so far this breeding season. Diamond said on average 200 kittens are being surrendered to the shelter each month.
If community members would rather help the shelter out with necessary supplies for the kittens, the shelter has registered with Walmart. Items such as replacement milk, toys and scratch pads are on the list.
Raffle tickets will also be sold during Saturday’s event for $1 each. Prizes will include dog and cat supplies along with previous year’s Mardi Gras posters, Diamond said. Winners do not need to be present for the drawing.
