Local movie theater opens Friday

For years residents in and around Picayune went to the local movie theater to catch the latest flicks, but about six years ago the business closed.

According to previous coverage in the Item, the local business closed in 2009 because the previous owner had trouble securing first-rate movies.

Since that time the building has been vacant, waiting for someone to take occupancy and possibly update it.

Late last year we reported that a company was working on reopening the theater, and updating it with many new amenities. The company’s name is Acadiana Cinemas.

This weekend Picayune residents will get a chance to see what the new company will bring to our citizens. Pictures on their Facebook page show that renovations have been extensive so far.

It’s always enticing to take a road trip to nearby communities for a night on the town. And the fact that our local theater has been closed for about six years made it necessary to travel to Slidell, Gulfport or even New Orleans to see the latest movie release.

However, the only way we can support our local businesses is to patronize them.

While the theater six years ago was known for having the cheapest ticket prices around, the renovation of this theater will mean the price to see a movie in Picayune will be closer to what you’re paying in the previously mentioned areas. According to their Facebook page, they will be charging $6.50 for matinee tickets, $8.50 for adult evening tickets and $6.50 for child tickets. Seniors can purchase a ticket for $6.50 for any showing.

While these prices are close to what other theaters charge in the general area, just think of all the money you will save in gas by not having to drive so far from home.

So set aside some time this weekend to support the new movie theater in town.
