A Picayune man is now in custody after fleeing from officers during a routine traffic stop before barricading himself in his own home.
The more than three hour stand off with law enforcement ended at about 1:30 p.m. when officers took 28-year-old Joseph Ryan Sumrall of 1304 East Sycamore Road into custody after using tactical gas grenades to drive him out of the home, said Picayune Police Chief Bryan Dawsey.
Representatives with law enforcement agencies state he fled from an officer who was attempting to conduct a standard traffic stop before driving to and barricading himself in his home. It appears Sumrall had several warrants out for his arrest with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department and a probation violation at the time of the stop, said Chief Deputy Shane Tucker.
Picayune Police officers are working on charges at press time. The Picayune Item will update this story in tomorrow’s edition.
No one else was in the home when officers took Sumrall into custody, and no one was injured as a result of the operation.
