They are an essential part of people’s daily lives. Without them, it would be more difficult to complete tasks.
For most men, they are a matter of necessity. However, for the majority of women they are a coveted piece of adornment.
The item in question, one might ask, is footwear.
There are times when running around barefoot in a field or in one’s backyard can feel invigorating. But when the weather is cool and the pavement is rocky, a good pair of shoes is required.
At Poplarville’s Diamonds and Dirt Shoe Boutique, Inc., not only will shoe enthusiasts find a perfect fit, but they will also find items to accessorize their look.
Owner Julie Smith was born and raised in Poplarville and attended Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work. She is married to Keith and they have two children, Cody and Brianna.
Smith was the program director of social services at Stone County Hospital until April of this year when she decided to open a boutique.
Smith said all women love shoes, purses and jewelry.
“I loved social work but now that the children are grown, I wanted to be able to offer the women of Poplarville boutique items without the boutique prices,” Smith said.
In the boutique, shoppers will find a variety of shoe styles including boots, booties, heels, wedges, flats and sandals. Shoe prices range from $20 to $60.
Along with footwear, Smith sells handbags, scarves, headbands, jewelry, baby boutique items and women’s baseball caps.
There are many types of jewelry to choose from including necklaces, Mississippi and collegiate themed jewelry, watches, earrings and bracelets.
Proud mothers can purchase sequined football, cheer and dance hats for $12 to $16.
Smith’s baby boutique items include clothing, leg warmers, bows and soleless sandals.
When asked how she came by her unique name, Smith said ultimately plans to expand her merchandise to include men’s work boots and cowboy boots.
“Both of my children compete in rodeo competitions and the diamonds are for the girls and the dirt is for cowboy boots and work boots,” Smith said.
Diamonds and Dirt Shoe Boutique is located at 1624 S. Main.
The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact Smith by phone at 601-795-5139.
