Pearl River County United Coalition has scheduled their annual March Against Drugs for this month.
The march is a community event that features music, skits and performances by the local high school bands, cheerleading squads and dance teams, said Pearl River County United member Dawn Bechtel.
This year’s event will be held on Oct. 18. A meeting to secure more details is set for Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. to be held at Highland Community Hospital.
The march will begin at the Resurrection Life Worship Center parking lot and travel down Memorial Boulevard to Telly Road then turn onto U.S. 11 before heading down Goodyear Boulevard and ending at the green space next to First Baptist Church of Picayune.
Bechtel said the event will feature a skit by Captain Shield.
The idea behind the march is to make a stand against drug use in the county. Bechtel said that local law enforcement agencies are doing an excellent job of taking drugs and the dealers off the streets, but this march is a chance for the community to make a stand as well.
“We invite everyone in the county and community to come out and march on that day,” Bechtel said.
In previous years as many as 1,500 people have come out in support of the march, Bechtel said.
In the event of inclement weather a backup day will be scheduled.
