Poplarville’s Hornets continued their winning streak Friday by almost shutting out the Moss Point Tigers.
With an ending score of 41-7 the Hornets add another win to their now four game streak.
Poplarville Head Coach Jay Beech said every aspect of his team played well Friday including offense, defense and special teams.
“We played really hard all night. We played as a team and it showed in the results,” Beech said.
The Hornets dominated each quarter of the game in scoring, earning two touchdowns in the first and third quarters, and one touchdown each in the second and fourth quarters.
In the first quarter Hornets quarterback Clay Garrett completed a pass to tight end Brandon McBride for a 16-yard touchdown. They would miss the extra point attempt. Also in the first quarter fullback Tyler Fricke would complete a one yard run for a touchdown that would put the score at 13-0 Hornets.
Moss Point put points on the board in the second quarter when Dominic Alexander ran a punt return 87 yards for a touchdown. It would be the only time the team would score that night.
Garrett would also put points on the board for the Hornets in the second quarter when he ran the ball a yard to the end zone, bringing the score to 20-7.
Hornets running back Malik Lucas had two big plays in the third quarter, one 79 yard run and a 23 yard run to the end zone that put 14 more points on the board.
Both successful extra point attempts brought the score to 34-7.
In the fourth quarter wide back Anthony Martin brought the ball 11 yards for a touchdown, putting the score at 41-7 with the successful extra point.
Poplarville logged 337 rushing yards to Moss Point’s 82 during Friday’s game.
Beech said his team is still making improvements as they head to Friday’s game.
Pass Christian’s team has improved since last year and has the ability to score due to their roster of skilled players, Beech said.
This Friday Poplarville will host Pass Christian for their homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
