County volunteer fire departments worked two structure fires over the weekend; neither involved injuries.

On Saturday at about 11:30 a.m. volunteer firefighters from Pine Grove, McNeill, Carriere, Nicholson and Henleyfield fire departments responded to a structure fire at a home located near Wheat’s Curve off of Miss. 43 N., Pearl River County Fire Marshal Albert Lee.

The residents were home at the time the fire occurred, but no one was injured, Lee said. After firefighters extinguished the fire, which was contained to the attic, it rekindled later that day, prompting the firefighters to return and put the fire out again, Lee said.

Damage was sustained to the home’s attic and bedrooms. Lee said preliminary investigation determined the cause of the fire to be accidental due to an electrical short in the attic.

On Sunday just after 2 p.m. firefighters with Southeast, Carriere and McNeill fire departments were sent to a singlewide trailer on Bouie Road in reference to a grease fire in the kitchen.

Lee said the firefighters responded and extinguished the fire, but the kitchen sustained heavy fire damage and the rest of the home suffered smoke damage.

No one was injured as a result of that fire, Lee said.
