The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department participated in the most recent Click it or Ticket campaign.
Sheriff’s Department Lt. Joe Quave said their participation between May 19 and June 1 involved conducting nine safety checkpoints and various traffic stops to look for instances of seatbelt and child restraint violations.
In addition to the 20 seatbelt and five child restraint violations found during their participation in the effort, officers also performed arrests for other violations.
Quave said the operation involved six DUI arrests, four arrests for outstanding warrants, a felony arrest and 31 misdemeanor charges such as expired or no vehicle tags and driving while license suspended. Quave said the misdemeanor offenses led to citations being issued in lieu of arrests.
Click it or Ticket is a nationwide campaign to inform motorists of the importance of using seatbelts and properly restraining children while riding in or operating a motor vehicle, Quave said.
When officers found an improperly restrained child, they would instruct the parents on how to properly restrain them.
Overtime for the officers was paid for through a grant from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
Every year the department participates in at least two Click it or Ticket campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of using seatbelts, Quave said.
