Carriere couple cuffed

Picayune Police officers responded to a careless driving call that ended in the arrest of two Carriere residents, said Jeremy Magri assistant to the chief.

“On Jan. 10 at 3:56 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area of the 900 block of Palestine Rd. in reference to careless driving,” Magri said. “Dispatch advised the officers enroute that the vehicle had pulled into a local grocery store parking lot on Palestine.

“Upon arrival, officers observed the vehicle in a grocery store parking lot, and also spoke with with the complainant, who stated they had observed the vehicle swerving all over the roadway, and that the occupants had exited the vehicle and entered the store upon the officers arrival.”

The officer then made contact with two suspects identified as Harvey Mitchell, 50 years-of-age, residing at 207 Rollingwood Dr., Carriere, and Sheila Shere, 48 years-of-age, residing at the same address, while they were still inside the business, Magri said.

“The officers observed both to be staggering, have slurred speech, and both their eyes to be dilated,” Magri said. “At this time, he escorted the subjects out of the store to speak with them outside and placed both suspects under arrest for public drunk.”

Upon searching Mitchell, the officer located a pill bottle labeled naproxen but it contained 7 white bars later identified as xanax and five pink circular pills identified as morphine, Magri said.

“At this point Mitchell was charged with possession of a controlled substance misdemeanor and possession of controlled substance felony, because morphine is a Schedule II narcotic,” Magri said. “They were transferred to the Criminal Justice Center where they were booked and incarcerated on said charges.”
