Lumpkin shines for Co-Lin; ‘Cats win

Former Pearl River Central standout Caroline Lumpkin came up big for Co-Lin Community College Monday night.

Lumpkin, a freshman guard for the Lady Wolves, enjoyed one of the best games of her collegiate career so far against a familiar foe. Lumpkin tallied 13 points as Co-Lin beat visiting Pearl River CC 78-59.

It was the third straight South Division win for the Lady Wolves, who stand 10-6 overall and 3-4 in league play. Ashley Minor led Co-Lin with 25 points in the win.

The Lady ‘Cats fell to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in league play with the loss.

Deantra Dejean paced PRCC with a game high 28 points, and she also had nine rebounds. She made 14 of 16 shots from the free throw line. Kalisha Washington added 23 points and eight steals for the Lady ‘Cats, while Shanta Echols had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Tamesha Horne added 11 points as well.

The PRCC men ended a four game losing streak with a 70-56 win over the Wolves. The Wildcats are 10-5 overall and 3-4 in league play. Co-Lin falls to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in South Division action.

Kaven Benard tallied a game high 22 points to lead the Wildcats, and he also pulled down eight boards. DeAngelo Coleman and Jeremy Hollimon each chipped in 13 points apiece to the winning effort.

Pearl River and Copiah-Lincoln eye South Division women’s and men’s rematches Thursday, Feb. 20, in Poplarville.

PRCC returns to the hardcourt when hosts Hinds Thursday for more South Division action at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) before traveling to division foe East Central next Monday for contests at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men).

Also on Monday, Freshman guard Bryce Jones hit a 28-footer at the buzzer to give the 14th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats a thrilling, 77-75 victory over the East Central Community College Warriors here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

The Warriors had taken a 75-74 lead with 3.9 seconds to play when Terrance Mujahid scored inside off an inbounds play.

But the Bobcats got the ball quickly downcourt and the left-handed Jones was true with a 3-point effort from straightaway, setting off a celebration by the JCJC players and fans.

The victory improves JCJC to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the MACJC South Division. East Central falls to 6-10 overall, 2-5 in league play.

In the women’s game, the Lady Bobcats overcame an 11-point, first half deficit and went on to defeat the Lady Warriors, 96-83. JCJC is now 11-5 overall, 5-2 in the division, while East Central falls to 7-9, 2-5.

The Bobcats begin the second half of the division schedule on Thursday when they travel to Southwest Mississippi Community College. The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

East Central hosts Meridian Community College on Thursday.
