City looking good but needs a few fixes
The City of Picayune is looking pretty good as we approach a new year.
The addition to City Hall – often called the “new City Hall” – is attractive and provides a good first stop for people interested in moving to the area and for business executives that may wish to locate a plant or business here.
The project to overlay city streets is virtually complete and that makes driving the streets easier and more pleasant.
We just wish the Mississippi Department of Transportation would be as motivated about expanding to four lanes that portion of U.S. Highway 11 from the Hobolochitto Creek bridge to above the entrance to HideA-Way Lake subdivision. Also, the Highland Commons Parkway needs completing.

which the road is to serve, is very attractive.
An area likely to add to the beauty of the city is that occupied by the old Crosby Memorial Hospital that is being demolished. Perhaps it will become green space, something no city can have too much of, with an amphitheater on one end for various outdoor productions.
Another area that needs roadwork is Mississippi Highway 43 South, named Memorial Boulevard in Picayune, as it nears the Interstate 59 bridge from downtown on the way to Wal-Mart. Much of the work on Memorial Boulevard has been done with federal money in the form of Community Development Block Grants that were received by the city with the aid of U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran.
Picayune Mayor Ed Pinero visited Senator Cochran in Washington last week, along with the Board of Supervisors President J. Patrick Lee. Hopefully, the mayor used some of that time to mention the need for money to complete the work on Memorial Boulevard.
The native trees that line Memorial Boulevard have grown to where their beauty is more apparent, and the intersection and median ground plantings in the city are also attractive.
Hopefully, the city will continue to add to this beauty as we move into the new year.
