Barth Road Bridge replacement project begins

On Tuesday, construction to replace the Barth Road Bridge in Poplarville began, according to Pearl River County Engineer Les Dungan.
The current bridge, which was built in 1934, is located at the Southwest end of Barth Road near Highway 53. The bridge is 18-and-a-half feet wide and the rated load limit is 12,000 pounds, Dungan said.
He also said that the new bridge is going to be a great improvement for Poplarville motorists.
“The goal is to replace the 80-year-old low-weight bridge with a new bridge designed to carry more weight,” Dungan said.
The new bridge is set to be 28-feet-wide and the rated load limit will be 80,000 pounds.
This project is part of the bridge replacement program, which was approved by the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors last year. The bridge will be replaced using federal funding, Dungan said.
He also said the bridge will be completely closed off to motorists for approximately six months until construction ends.
Dungan added that no on-site detour roads were constructed, but there are signs highlighting alternate routes.
