At the beginning of the week, I walked into a local grocery store and was instantly met with the sweet aroma of baking king cakes.
This means that Mardi Gras is right around the corner. It’s such a festive time of the year. I have always been enamored with the elaborately decorated costumes and floats.
Each year, in my hometown of Waveland, the Krewe of Nereids parade rolls down Highway 90.
I am also granted a behind-the-scenes look into the world of this krewe since my best friend, Sarah, works for renowned Mardi Gras costume designer, Carter Church in Bay St. Louis.
During this time every year, Sarah and Church put in long hours to ensure that every sequin and feather is in the right place on each outfit. The finished products are amazing.
Along with king cakes, balls and parades, there is also another matter to consider during this season and that’s safety and planning tips.

The website recommends the following:
– Making hotel reservations at least eight months in advance.
– Leaving expensive valuables including jewelry and handbags at home.
– Wearing comfortable walking shoes.
– Not walking in front of floats or standing too close to the sides of the route.

Mardi Gras is about having a great time in one of the most eclectic cities in the entire world.
There are also great Mardi Gras activities happening in the city of Picayune such as the Krewe of the Pearl’s Mardi Gras ball and parade.
No matter where you celebrate Mardi Gras, make sure it’s done safely.
