Sho-Nuff BBQ and Catering in Picayune is working with Bad to the Bone BBQ out of Slidell, La. to host the third annual Best of the Best Benefit.
For the past two years, Reggie Smith and Louis Graham, owners of Sho-Nuff BBQ, have held a BBQ competition with all proceeds from the event going to a charity. The money earned this year will be given to Toys for Tots.
“This is our way of giving back to the community,” said Smith, “It’s all about charity.”
Paul Berdux, owner of Bad to the Bone BBQ, is helping to host the event.
For the first time, the governor has sanctioned this year’s competition as a Mississippi State Championship event, said Smith.
Smith expects there to be about 30 teams participating in the competition this year. Teams are traveling into Picayune from all over the region; entrants are expected to come from Baton Rouge, La., Nashville, Tenn., Tupelo and other parts of Mississippi.
They can expect some tough competition – Smith and his team has been in 12 competitions, and they have won them all. There will be some professional BBQ groups there, as well as some talented backyard cooks. Anyone can compete, and the grand champion of the competition will be featured in the Jack Daniels Championship event next year.
There are other fun activities at the event, such as music, bungie jumping, a climbing wall and fun jumps for kids. The competition will take place at Snyder Park located on Beech Street in Picayune, and it starts at 9 a.m. on Dec. 6.
Admission is $3, and children under six get in for free. Anyone who brings a new toy valued at $10 or more will be admitted to the competition for free as well.
