Spring games on tap

Several local prep football teams will wrap up Spring Training drills by competing in annual Spring Gmes on Friday night.

Picayune will travel to Perkinston  and meet both host Stone County as well as Hattiesburg in a pair of scrimmages.

The Maroon Tide will begin action at 7 p.m., and face both the Tigers and Tomcats in sesions that will last one half.

“We’ve done some things well so far, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” veteran Picayune head coach Dodd Lee said, of the Maroon Tide’s spring drills.

Picayune will be without six starters that will be in Pearl for the Class 5A state track and field meet that takes place on Friday.

Hattiesburg is under the direction of former South Panola offensive coordinator Trey Dickinson.

Pearl River Central, meanwhile, will travel to D’Iberville for its spring game.

The Blue Devils, entering their second season under head coach Eric Collins, will face both the host Warriors as well as Forrest County AHS in one half each. Pascagoula, who will be a new division foe for both PRC and Picayune next season, will also compete in the scrimmage.

Also, the West Harrison Hurricanes , who will also be another new division foe for both Picayune and PRC next season,  will conclude spring football with a three-team jamboree Thursday at West Harrison High School. Competing in the jamboree with the Hurricanes are Hancock and Vancleave.

Action begins at 5 p.m. with junior varsity play. It will be followed with varsity action, Vancleave-West Harrison for a quarter, Vancleave-Hancock for a quarter and West Harrison-Hancock for a quarter. The Hawks are under the direction of head coach David King, entering his third season at the helm of his alma mater.

Poplarville is also wrapping up spring drills this week. The Hornets are entering their fourth season under head coach Chris Teal.
