Katherine Depreo of Picayune has been charged with fraud and acquisition of a controlled substance.

According to a press release from the Picayune Police Department, detectives received a call from a local pharmacy on Oct. 25, that a suspicious prescription was called in.

When pharmacy staff called the doctor’s office to confirm the prescription, they were told that the person posing as an employee who called it in did not work there, said Capt. Chad Dorn.

Narcotics officers arrived at the pharmacy just as the suspect, 29-year-old Depreo of Picayune, arrived to pick up the prescription, the release states. A traffic stop was conducted on her vehicle as she was leaving the pharmacy.

Officers recovered evidence during the stop that she was the one who called in the fraudulent prescription, which was for 80 Tramadol. Tramadol is a synthetic opioid pain reliever.

Dorn said officers also recovered the pills and what appeared to be a written script that Depreo used word for word while calling in the prescription.

Investigators are checking into whether Depreo was involved in other attempts to acquire prescription medication through fraudulent means, Dorn said.
