During the past week the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department took an alleged sex offender into custody, resolved a burglary and robbery and put a methamphetamine lab out of production.

The rape of a 15 year-old girl and an 18 year-old mentally handicapped female are alleged to have involved the same man, who was picked up by Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

According to a press release from the department, on May 6, the 15 year-old said William A. Campbell, 39, of 81 Larow Dr., Carriere, allegedly provided her with alcohol before raping her at his residence. After the alleged incident she walked to a nearby friend’s home where the Sheriff’s Department was called.

The 18 year-old came forward after Campbell was arrested stating that she was raped by Campbell on April 28, and on two prior occasions. Alcohol was also alleged to have been involved in those incidents, the release states.

Campbell was charged with one count of rape of the 15 year-old and three counts of sexual battery of the 18 year-old. His probable cause hearing before the Justice Court Judge James Hal Breland was held on May 8. Breland set bond at $100,000 for the count of rape and $40,000 for each count of sexual battery. Campbell also was ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device since he violated his pre-trial intervention program he was placed on while out on bond for a March arrest for possession of a controlled substance, ecstasy. His preliminary hearing has been set for May 15.

In a case that occurred yesterday, a deputy was advised a vehicle had been stolen. Later that day, the victim’s girlfriend said she had seen the vehicle parked on Sixth Avenue, which is where the deputy found the vehicle and the suspect, Melissa Kennedy, 22, of 26 S. Front St. Kennedy admitted to taking the truck, the release states.

Capt. Chris Lott said he could not release the reason Kennedy took the truck. She was charged with the grand larceny of the stolen vehicle.

Earlier, on May 9, another vehicle was stolen by force. During the investigation deputies learned the suspect, identified as Kennith Daspit, 26, of 23265 Billie Green Rd., Kiln, was employed by the victim of the stolen vehicle. That day the victim fired Daspit. After the victim declined to give Daspit a ride home, Daspit pulled a knife and demanded the keys to the vehicle. Daspit then struck the victim in the face and took the keys to the vehicle.

The vehicle it was located at Keith’s Chevron on Miss. 43 N., the release states. Daspit was charged with the armed robbery of the vehicle. Lott said the charge included the assault.

On Tuesday of this week, deputies were conducting traffic check on Rock Ranch Road when a vehicle pulled up to the check point and the deputy could smell the odor of marijuana coming from it. The deputy asked the driver, David Chappuis, 20, of 48 Long Branch, Carriere, was asked for his license and proof of insurance. As Chappuis opened the center console to retrieve his insurance papers, the deputy noticed three pills in a cigarette cellophane, Lott said. Chappuis was asked to pull to the side of the road. He and the passenger Courtney Kingsbury, 17, also of 48 Long Branch, were asked to exit the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy retrieved the pills identified as Xanax and a bag of marijuana weighing more than one ounce, according to the release. Both Kingsbury and Chappuis were charged for simple possession of Xanax and felony possession of marijuana. Lott said both were charged because neither suspect would claim ownership of the narcotics.

On Monday, deputies responded to a commercial burglary in Carriere where a go cart and about $2,500 in scrap aluminum was taken from the business. After deputies recovered the go cart, they discovered that Randy Mitchell, 27, of 9613 U.S. 11 was responsible for the stolen goods. Deputies found Mitchell on U.S. 11 and went to take him into custody. In the process, deputies found about six grams of cocaine with other small baggies on the floor board of his vehicle. Mitchell was taken into custody and a search warrant was secured to search Mitchell’s home. During the search of the home deputies found about four more grams of cocaine.

Mitchell was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and commercial burglary. Lott said the aluminum was never recovered. Mitchell was given no bond since he was out on bond for a prior charge of possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.

On May 10, deputies and members of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics served a search warrant at 93 Ozona Rd where they found three suspects and an operational methamphetamine laboratory. Also in the home the team found the precursor chemicals and the manufactured drug.

Arrested were Katonia Campbell, 46, of 93 Ozona Rd., Jerry Lee Barone, 37, of 311 Yearling LP, Pearl River, La. and Gerald Williams, 53 of 1433 Highway 177, Bonifey, Fla., for manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of precursor chemicals and possession of methamphetamine.
