Ed Orgeron is still hunting for a consistent quarterback, saying the job remains up for grabs entering preseason practices. Brent Schaeffer and former walk-on Seth Adams are battling for the No. 1 spot.

“We have had very inconsistent play at the quarterback position the last two years,” Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron said. “We’re looking for a consistent quarterback, a quarterback that can have a short, controlled passing game, that can make the right decisions.”

Schaeffer completed just 47 percent of his passes and was intercepted 10 times. Adams saw action in six games, attempting just 31 passes but not getting picked off, and he had a strong spring game.

Orgeron said he doesn’t want to employ a two-quarterback system but didn’t rule out the possibility.

“(Schaeffer) has a very strong arm, but he’s a very inconsistent player,” Orgeron said. “He has an inconsistent lifestyle that leads to that. Seth is not as good an athlete. Seth is always there. He’s a leader. He makes great decisions on the line of scrimmage.”

By Schaeffer’s “inconsistent lifestyle,” Orgeron said he meant things like attending class and meetings and being a team leader.
