First Step Learning Lab will be giving away free backpacks and school supplies at a Back to School Bash set for July 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 at Leola Jordan Park in Picayune.

Along with free school supplies, the event will feature face painting, a waterslide, a fun jump and a dunk booth, said Wanda Worley, owner of First Step Learning Lab.

“I was homeless all through high school, so I had a hard time getting my own supplies and getting my own uniforms and things like that, so I want to make a difference and show kids, school can be fun,” Worley said.

Back to school can be a difficult time for parents too, Worley said, and she hopes the event will show everyone that the community can pull together to support local children.

The event will also have a booth where youngsters can sign up for after school care, private tutoring or help them prepare for college, Worley said.

First Step Learning Lab is fundraising for the event by selling $5 raffle tickets for a prize that includes a car wash, $100 Walmart gift card and three months of free after school care, Worley said. All proceeds from the raffle will go toward purchasing school supplies, Worley said. People interested in purchasing tickets can contact Worley at 601-347-1246 or stop in at First Step Learning Lab.
