Salvador Joseph Calato Sr., born on March 4, 1939, in Independence, La., passed away on May 6, 2024, after bravely battling non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Formerly from St. Bernard Parish and Folsom, La., Salvador resided in Picayune, Miss., where he was a cherished member of his community.

Salvador was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Calato and Theresa Distafano Calato.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Crespo Calato, and was formerly married to Carolyn Crespo Calato. He was a devoted father to Salvador Calato Jr. (Cheryll), Kelly Calato Romano (Joseph III), and Louis Calato (Brandy) and grandfather to Courtney Calato Lee (Sam), Meghan Romano, Brennen Calato, Chase Calato, and Juliana Romano, and stepfather to Brad Barone (Sarah).

A beloved brother, Salvador is survived by Frank Calato (Gail) and nephews, Michael Calato (Donna) and Stephen Calato (Jill). Sal also leaves behind a multitude of nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly.

Salvador’s roots ran deep in St. Bernard Parish, where he was raised. He co-owned and operated C&C Contractors for 40 years. Salvador’s kindness knew no bounds; he was a beacon of support, always offering his time and assistance to those in need.

Salvador served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the New Bethel Full Gospel Community Church and worked for the St. Bernard Engineering Department for 15 years.

In the hearts of many, Salvador Joseph Calato, Sr., will be remembered for his unwavering love, boundless generosity, and the countless lives he touched. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity or organization of their choice in memory of Salvador Joseph Calato, Sr.

A celebration of Salvador’s life will be at a date to be determined. All who knew him are invited to attend and honor his remarkable life.
