Picayune has taken a significant step towards progress with the approval of $3.4 million in funding for the I-59 Frontage Road Project. This multi-phase project will construct a much-needed frontage road from Sycamore Road, across from Paul’s Pastry, extending to Memorial Blvd. at the McDonald’s and Walgreens entrance. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion on main thoroughfares, enhance accessibility, and stimulate economic growth in the area.
The funding was secured through the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) bill, signed into law by President Biden. In November 2023, Mayor Jim Luke, Councilmembers Lyn Bumpers, Jan Stevens, and Larry Breland, and City Clerk Sid Albritton, along with representatives from the Pickering Firm, met with Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker, as well as the staff of Congressman Mike Ezell, advocating for the I-59 Frontage Road Project. This visit followed a previous trip to Washington D.C. in March 2023, emphasizing the project’s importance to federal lawmakers.
“This funding represents a significant milestone for Picayune,” Mayor Jim Luke remarked. “The council and I worked diligently to underscore the importance and necessity of the I-59 Frontage Road Project for Picayune’s economic development. I commend City Clerk Sid Albritton for his dedication and countless hours devoted to this project, which was instrumental in securing the funding. His efforts have undoubtedly paved the way for Picayune’s future prosperity.”
Councilman Larry Breland emphasized the project’s significance, stating it presents a tremendous opportunity for Picayune. He highlighted its potential to enhance the city’s infrastructure, fuel economic growth, and strengthen community connections. Councilwoman Lyn Bumpers echoed these sentiments, noting that the funding represents a step forward for Picayune and underscores the community’s collective achievements. She expressed excitement for the project’s commencement, anticipating the positive impact it will have on the community.
Councilwoman Jan Stevens underscored the project’s benefits for residents, noting its potential to improve transportation infrastructure, create jobs, and enhance quality of life. She emphasized that the project represents a wise investment in Picayune’s future.
As Picayune prepares to embark on this transformative journey, Mayor Luke and the City Council extend thanks to Senators Hyde-Smith and Wicker, Congressman Ezell, Sid Albritton, and the Pickering Firm for their support and dedication. They also express appreciation to Mississippi Senator Angela Hill and Representative Stacey Wilkes for securing $850,000 from the state to initiate the road project on the north end. Together, these collaborative efforts have set the stage for a brighter future for Picayune and its residents.
