The Mississippi Highway Patrol’s “Home for the Holidays” safety initiative is continuing through the end of the year, according to a press release from MHP.

Highway Patrol troopers will focus on the same issues as during the Christmas holiday enforcement period: speeding, intoxicated driving and seat belt use violations, said Troop K Public Information Officer Calvin Robertson.

MHP will conduct a holiday enforcement period for New Year’s beginning on Dec. 31 and ending Jan. 1 at midnight, said Robertson.

The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department is participating in a nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign that began Dec. 13 and will continue until Jan. 1, according to previous coverage.

During the Christmas holiday enforcement period from Dec. 23 to Dec. 25, MHP issued 2,544 citations and made 39 DUI arrests statewide, according to the release. Troop K, which covers the six coastal counties including Pearl River, conducted four DUI arrests during the enforcement period.

Statewide, MHP investigated 116 collisions, three of which resulted in fatalities. The fatalities occurred in Hinds County, Lee County and Copiah County.

Troop K investigated four collisions during the holiday enforcement period, none of which included major injuries.
