Kim Holcomb turned a job loss into an opportunity for entrepreneurship with her business Twist Cupcakes.
Holcomb worked at the Poplarville bakery for a year when it was under different management. When the owner decided to close the bakery for personal reasons, it looked like Holcomb would lose her job. Instead, she decided to purchase the business, give it a new look and keep the same recipes customers know and love.
“It’s a dream come true,” Holcomb said. “I never thought I’d be a business owner.
The business closed for the month of August, while Holcomb and her co-owner, her husband Shawn Holcomb, updated the interior and added new signage.
The bakery sells cupcakes, brownies, cake pops, cake bites and marshmallow bites, along with tea, coffee, and cold milk. The bakery will also cater cupcakes for weddings.
While the bakery will continue to serve the cupcake recipes former customers are familiar with, Holcomb will also offer a new seasonal cupcake flavor every week.
Another new feature of the business are private bake parties, where kids can don chef hats and decorate their own cupcakes, Holcomb said, and private cupcake tea parties.
Holcomb and her three person staff are focused on quality service, she said.
“We just want to bring joy to the community,” Holcomb said. “We want them to feel better when they leave here.”
The business added WiFi to appeal to college students, Holcomb said, and she hopes study groups and Bible studies decide to meet there.
Twist Cupcakes is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bakery is located at 1403 S. Main St. Suite B1, Poplarville and can be reached at 601-746-5180.
