The Senior Center of South Pearl River County is preparing for the fifth annual Senior Games set for June 13 and 14, said Executive Director David Sykes. The games will take place at the Center from 9 a.m. to noon both days, he said.

The Senior Games are inspired by the Olympics, and even include medals for bronze, silver and gold in each competition, Sykes said. The games include events like archery, beanbag toss, horseshoes and the one-mile walk, Sykes said.

“I think they really like the archery because most of them haven’t shot a bow and arrow since they were a kid,” Sykes said.

Participants are sometimes surprised when they hit the archery target, he said. The games offer low impact competition and end with a celebration luncheon on June 14, he said. The events have remained consistent over the years and typically about 40 people participate, he said.

“It’s pretty friendly competition, but they love to get those gold medals,” Sykes said.

To prepare for the games, seniors are able to practice their Wii bowling or beanbag toss skills at the Senior Center in the days leading up to the event, Sykes said.

The sign up deadline is June 12 and participants can fill out an application form on the Senior Center’s website, or call or visit the Center for more information, Sykes said.

Spectators are welcome, although typically people who come to watch end up wanting to participate, Sykes said.

“It get’s them up and moving and laughing. It’s just a great time for everybody,” Sykes said.

The Center is located at 45 El Patch Parkway, Picayune and can be reached by calling 601-798-9892.
