It may not have seemed like it in the Picayune area, but Pearl River County was battered by an abundance of rain last weekend. 

In the north end, more rain fell than in the south end during that multi-day rainstorm, and that meant the water that fell up north would come south at some point.

But even though some areas of the county near creeks did wind up flooding on Sunday and Monday, the bulk of the damage was sustained near Poplarville, leading to a number of rescues being performed by trained personnel.

Several roads washed out or were impassable for most of the weekend in the Poplarville area, and that meant emergency crews were scrambling to get trapped residents and motorists to safety.

So many calls came in that assistance from swift water response crews from the region was required.  And there was even an incident where two men and some dogs had to be rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter from a vehicle that ended up in flood waters.

We don’t always give proper recognition to the many caring people in this region who are willing to help at a moment’s notice. Saturday’s rain event is proof they are here.
