A local law enforcement motorcycle club and the Picayune Police Department have teamed up to raise money for a Picayune Police officer’s fight against cancer.

Liteunant James Drewery is continuing his work at the Picayune Police Department, even as he undergoes chemotherapy, said Blue Knights MS Chapter IX President David Ervin.

“It’s a real struggle for him,” Ervin said.

To help cover his medical costs, the local chapter of the Blue Knights of Mississippi and the police department are selling $10 chicken and sausage jambalaya plates at Jack Read Park on May 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Ervin said he encourages people to buy tickets in advance from Blue Knights members or at the police department.

Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steve Seal and his son John are preparing the jambalaya, Ervin said. Seal has previously prepared jambalaya for other fundraisers in the county, Ervin said.

“Everybody just raves about the jambalaya,” he said.

The cost of ingredients is being donated by the Blue Knights and the police department, so all proceeds from the fundraiser will help Drewery with his medical expenses, Ervin said.

Donations are also welcome, Ervin said, and several local businesses have already donated money.
“He’s a local first responder, out there ready to put his life on the line for our community,” Ervin said. “We just think the world of him. He’s a great guy and we want to do anything we can to help him.”

Tickets have already been selling rapidly, Ervin said, but there should be enough jambalaya for some walkups.
