Update: This story has been corrected to reflect the correct date of the concert.

The Pearl River County Community Band will hold its annual spring concert on Sunday May 5th. The concert will feature flight and space themed music to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The concert will take place at the Picayune Memorial High School Auditorium.

The music will include pieces from “2001 A Space Odyssey” and “Star Wars,” Band Director Archie Rawls said. The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. and is expected to run 40 minutes to 1 hour with no intermission.

The band is comprised of retirees, high school students and college students. Band members began practicing the pieces for the upcoming concert in January, Rawls said.

“It’s always more enjoyable to play when you know you have the support of the community,” Rawls said. “That’s what musicians live for, is to perform.”

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Donations cover insurance costs and fund a scholarship for high school seniors who are members of the band, Rawls said.
