The Senior Center of South Pearl River County will soon be holding its annual Senior Prom but is in need of clothing donations and volunteers.

Senior Center Participant Coordinator Kathleen Penton said the upcoming prom will be held on August 23 from 1-4 p.m. and will feature live music by Tim Burns and the Solid Gold Music Barn. The theme will be “Southern Belles and Beaus,” she said.

Penton said participants look forward to the annual event. A local woman will be making corsages and boutonnieres and a professional photographer will capture the event and take portraits of the couples. She said the Senior Center will be decorated to match the theme.

Penton said the event usually draws in about 100 attendees, but staff are expecting more since there will be live music this year.

For the prom to be a success, Penton said donations of ball gowns are needed. She said there is not a particular color scheme at the moment, so anything is welcome. While there is not a deadline for donations, Penton asked that the dresses are brought in at least a week before the event so participants have a chance to look through them and find a size that fits.

Penton said they are also seeking donations of finger foods such as salad trays and sandwich plates. They also hope to have door prizes available for the event if a business would like to donate a prize. Penton said she is also seeking volunteers to help decorate the venue.

Fran Gerhart said she and her husband have attended the Senior Center’s prom for the past three years. She said she is looking forward to this year’s theme.

“We always have a great time. It’s a wonderful outing for seniors. It gives them a chance to dress up and do something outside of their everyday schedule,” Gerhart said.

Penton said donations are accepted during regular business hours, which are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Senior Center can be reached at 601-798-9852.
