In an attempt to promote a clean community, three groups of adults and children will participate in a cleanup campaign beginning 6 a.m., on July 21.
Children from Heritage Christian Academy’s Cross Country Team will join members of the Christian Do Karate Club of Purvis and Picayune along with adults and children of The Bearcats Gulf Coast Running Club as they walk or run from Gulfport to Waveland.
Cross country and track instructor Jay Stricker said the cleanup will begin across from Jones Park in Gulfport and end at Buccaneer State Park in Waveland.
Stricker said he decided to organize the cleanup after seeing amount of trash on the beach during a run from Ocean Springs to Gulfport earlier this summer.
βThe beach was nasty…,β Stricker said.
Stricker would later see volunteers picking up trash left after residents celebrated the 4th of July on the beach.
About 23 individuals are expected to participate in the event and will start from Gulfport at 6 a.m., and are expected to reach Waveland between 6-8 p.m., Stricker said.
He said the objective of the cleanup is to raise awareness about the importance of a clean environment, while also giving the kids a workout, he said.
