The Senior Center of South Pearl River County will be offering a seminar that can help senior citizens take proper measures to ensure they are safe in their homes.

The seminar is entitled “Safety in the Home” and is scheduled to take place June 11 at 11 a.m.

It will include presentations by staff from Bedford Care Center of Picayune, said Delana Tarnok, the center’s marketing liaison. She said the presentation will include information on safety precautions in the home and various therapeutic and rehabilitation services offered at the center if the need arises, she said.

Tarnok said the center has recently experienced an influx of senior citizens with complaints regarding senior citizens injuring themselves during a fall in their home.

She said the goal of the workshop is to inform senior citizens that although all hazards cannot be prevented, being mindful and taking precautions can help them prevent future accidents.

Emily Gartman, a licensed physical therapist assistant and the rehabilitation director at Bedford Care Center said the seminar will also focus on how rehabilitation can help senior citizens get back into their homes after injures.

“We want to get them back where they were before,” Gartman said.

She said safety in the home is frequently overlooked. At times accidents can be caused by something as simple as tripping over a rug, stumbling over pets or toys or running in to furniture. Tips to avoid these accidents will be included in the presentation.
