Case of mailed weed turns physical with suspect

A Picayune man was arrested for accepting illegal narcotics that were mailed to him, after attacking Picayune Police Officers.

According to a departmental release, the incident occurred Feb. 15, when Picayune Police Narcotics detectives discovered a package in the mail containing about 20 pounds of marijuana. The package was listed for delivery to an abandoned house on Walker Street. Knowing the package would be expected soon, detectives began an undercover operation.

Undercover detectives transported the narcotics to the abandoned house for delivery. As they approached the house, they met with Taron Carl Reese Jr., 31, 135 Greenview Drive, Picayune, who was sitting on the front porch. Detectives had Reese sign for the package, after which they revealed themselves as officers.

At that point, Reese attacked the detectives, the release states. In the attack Reese threw one detective into the back wall and pushed another through the porch railing before fleeing on foot. Detectives pursued him on foot down Walker Street until he ran through a yard and jumped over a chainlink fence. Detectives tried to follow him to no avail, the release states.

Later, officers with the patrol division located Reese and placed him into custody. He was placed under arrest for conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a church, resisting arrest by fleeing, and assault on a police officer, the release states.

The estimated street value of the marijuana was $128,000.
