Traffic stop leads to arrest of two individuals from out of town

Two individuals from out-of-town were arrested by the Picayune Police Department after they were found to be in possession of illegal substances.

According to a departmental release, a patrol officer conducted a traffic stop for careless driving on a vehicle driven by Timothy O’Neal Magee, 41, of 42 Booth Circle Bassfield, Miss.; on Dec. 28 at about 2:36 p.m.

When the patrol officer approached the vehicle, he found Ashley Popovits, 30, of 406 Fawn Run Rd., Pearl River, La., in the passenger seat.

During the stop, Magee was unable to provide  a driver’s license and proof of insurance, the release states. While speaking with Magee and Popovits, the patrol officer smelled a strong odor of what was believed to be marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Afterwards, a Picayune Police Narcotics Detective arrived and searched the vehicle, in which a black digital scale containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, clear plastic bags, a mason jar containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, a glass pipe containing a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine and a syringe were found, the release states.

Investigative techniques determined the illegal substances were allegedly intended to be sold another individual, the release states.

Magee and Popovits were arrested for conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance within 1500 ft. of a church, possession of controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1500 ft. of a church and Magee was also cited for careless driving, no driver’s license and no insurance, the release states.
