CARRIERE — Three goals late in the second half by Hattiesburg allowed the team to defeat the Lady Devils 4-0 in district action Monday night.
Kendyl Terrell gave Hattiesburg (9-4-2, 4-1 Region 7-5A) an early lead after scoring her first goal of the night during the first half of the game.
Terrell had an opportunity to increase Hattiesburg’s lead at the 13th minute, but a save by Pearl River Central High School goalkeeper Kylie Guerra kept the Lady Devils (2-10, 2-2 Region 7-5A) within a goal of tying the game. Guerra finished the match with three saves.
With 11 minutes left in the game, Terrell scored her second goal of the night for the Lady Tigers after receiving a long pass across the field and being able to dribble past Guerra and shooting the ball in the back of the net.
A minute later, Terrell completed a hat trick with a score off a free-kick from about 40-yards out. With the game coming to an end, Hattiesburg’s Taytum Terrell scored the team’s fourth goal of the night.
“The girls performed great, I was so proud of them. Even though we didn’t end up on top, they have been overachieving this entire season,” PRC Head Girls Soccer Coach Joe Weems said. “From where we started to where we are now, they have improved so much. They’re complimenting each other, they’re playing smart and very consistent, they don’t panic and they have been doing a great job.”
— Hattiesburg 4, PRC 1: Two goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half pushed the Tigers to a 4-1 district victory against PRC Monday night.
Hattiesburg (6-7-2, 4-1 Region 7-5A) scored the first goal of the game during the 18th minute of the first half via a header, and just before halftime PRC’s Samuel Lambert took a shot towards the goal but Hattiesburg’s goalkeeper made the save.
With the score 3-0 in favor of the Tigers, the Blue Devils’ (8-6-1, 2-2 Region 7-5A) only goal of the night came late in the second half off a header by Kyle Van Marcke, after receiving an assist from Blaze Giovengo. But three minutes later, Hattiesburg scored its fourth and final goal of the game.
Van Marcke finished the game with four shots on the goal, while Giovengo had two. Blue Devils goalkeeper Cole Benoit had four saves.
“We were embarrassed tonight and we haven’t played like that all year, this was our worst game of the season but we can do better,” Weems said. “We had three starters out but that’s not an excuse. We stunk it up but we still have an opportunity to make the playoffs and we know we can play better but we just have to figure it out quickly.”
Both the boys and girls soccer teams will face North Pike High School in key district games in back-to-back days. PRC will travel to North Pike Thursday and then host the Jaguars Friday night.
