Make time to give the gift of life next week

Pelican Urgent Care will be hosting its first blood drive since the medical center opened its doors in Pearl River County in September of last year.
The effort to collect blood donations is set to take place Jan. 30, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
According to the American Red Cross potential donors should not wait for a reason to give blood, such as when a family member is in need.
Donating is easy and involves going to a nearby clinic or hospital where staff will cover eligibility criteria and donation information. This upcoming event will provide information concerning giving blood. Keep in mind that all donors will be required to show a donor card, driver’s license or other form of valid identification.
During the process, medical personnel will ask about your medical history and will check your temperature, pulse, blood and hemoglobin level, so be prepared.
Once blood is collected, the patient will be advised to snack on something light or be provided light refreshments before being sent back to their routine.
The Red Cross states that in order to successfully donate blood you should maintain a healthy iron level in your diet and to be as hydrated as possible.
To ensure you are properly hydrated, potential donors should drink an extra 16 oz. of liquid prior to and after donating. The Red Cross also recommends having a healthy meal before giving blood.
If you haven’t given blood before, or if it’s been a while, consider setting aside time next week to attend this worthwhile event. Because giving blood is one of the most selfless acts we can accomplish in one day.
