A fatal accident at Central Landfill in Millard occurred Tuesday, which involved an unoccupied vehicle that struck a pedestrian.
Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said the deceased was identified as, Fred Victor Emelio, 79, of Perkinston, Miss. Emelio’s cause of death was listed as being due to blunt force trauma due to a single motor vehicle accident.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at about 1 p.m. after Emelio arrived to the dump and attempted to put his vehicle in park before exiting it, Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said.
For an unknown reason the vehicle’s parking gear did not engage, so after Emelio exited the vehicle, the truck started to roll down the hill it was parked upon.
Tucker said Emelio chased his vehicle down the hill, but fell and became unconscious in the process. The truck then rolled upon another hill causing it to roll back toward Emelio, striking him while upon the ground, Tucker said.
