Pearl River County School District Board of Trustees hold monthly meeting

The Pearl River County School District Board of Trustees met Thursday afternoon to discuss closing for the impending weather and to tackle routine matters before the Christmas break.
The meeting began with Superintendent Alan Lumpkin announcing that classes for all schools in the Pearl River County School District will be canceled for Friday, Dec. 8, due to inclement weather.
“We will submit the appropriate paperwork to the Mississippi Board Of Education in order to know if and when to make up this snow day” Lumpkin said.
In other business, the Board approved:
—A grant of $4,500 from the International Paper Foundation to the Pearl River County Middle School Junior Cadet Corp Program. The grant will be used to help pay for the program’s utilities.
—A $500 Environmental Stewardship Award from Mississippi Power to Leigh Lenoir. According to previous coverage, Lenior is a teacher at Pearl River County Upper Elementary and plans to use the money to revamp the school’s butterfly garden.
—A trip for the Pearl River County High School NJROTC to New Orleans on Jan. 27, to compete in Brain Brawl. According to the University of Mississippi Division of Outreach and Continuing Education website, the event is an annual quiz bowl where teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and other states in the southeast compete against one another.
— A trip for the Pearl River County High School dance team to compete in nationals in Orlando, Fla. from Feb. 1-7.
