According to a departmental release, state troopers will set up multiple safety checkpoints to remove impaired drivers from the roads and promote seatbelt usage.

Picayune Police Department Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said officers within the city will also conduct safety checkpoints and utilize extra manpower to ensure the safety of Picayune’s residents.

Magri said the department would like to ensure everyone has a safe holiday and asks Pearl River County residents who plan to attend a party to not drink and drive. If someone plans to drink, they should find a designated driver.

The enforcement period is part of MHP’s safety initiative “Making It Home for the Holidays.”

Last year at this time troopers investigated 94 vehicle crashes, including four fatalities on federal and state highways statewide, the release states.
