Person passing off counterfeit bills in southern Mississippi is arrested

After several complaints were received by law enforcement agencies of a man passing off counterfeit bills, Darius Sumrall, 26, of 6264 Highway 49 in Hattiesburg, was arrested and booked for three counts of misdemeanor possession of counterfeit bank notes.

According to a press release from the Picayune Police Department, on Sept. 12, a local business reported a man later determined to be Sumrall purchased items at a Picayune business using a $100 counterfeit bill. After further investigation, it was found the same suspect had passed similar bills in other cities the same day, the release states.

On Oct. 11, two businesses in Picayune reported a man matching the same description used counterfeit $50 and $100 bills at local businesses. After verifying the identity of the man via surveillance video, it was confirmed to be the same person, the release states.

On Oct. 26, a victim at a business in Hattiesburg recognized Sumrall and notified the police. The Picayune Police Department subsequently issued a warrant for Sumrall’s arrest and on Nov. 2, Sumrall was located and detained by the Hattiesburg police.
