The Pearl River County SPCA now in the top ten to win $5,000 in the Wahl Dirty Dogs Contest, but needs the community’s help.

The Wahl Dirty Dogs Contest is a showdown of dogs that underwent extensive grooming to improve rom when they first entered the animal shelter.

Each contestant must provide a before and after picture of the dog that underwent the transformation, which a panel of judges reviewed. Two weeks later, the judges selected their top 10 submissions, one being a dog formerly housed at the PRC SPCA.

“Whenever we get a dog that looks like it could use some grooming, we do it. This dog definitely needed the grooming and turned out to be such a cute dog after,” PRC SPCA President Judy Wheaton said.

Dexter, a 1-year-old Peke and Shih Tzu mix, was brought to the shelter with very long and shaggy hair and a skin issue caused by allergies. Dexter also suffers from a chronic eye problem. Despite all of the medical attention Dexter needed, a man walked into the shelter looking for his wife’s birthday present. Once he saw Dexter, Wheaton said he immediately fell in love.

“We wanted to make sure he knew what he was getting into with all the medical needs Dexter had, but he didn’t seem to care. He knew what he wanted and was not discouraged by the condition of Dexter,” she said.

Now, Dexter’s story has placed the shelter in the top 10 in the Wahl Dirty Dogs Contest with a chance to win $5,000, which will go toward treating the animals at the shelter and help with operation expenses.

“That $5,000 would go a long way for us,” Wheaton said.

The second place winner will receive $2,000 and the third place winner receives $1,000.

Public votes determine the top three winners of the contest. As such, the PRC SPCA is reaching out to the community in an effort to help the shelter win these funds.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Dexter was in 8th place, but there is time before voting ends on Aug. 21. People can vote once every 24 hours.
